Cookie and I just got back from the AKC Dog Show in Atlanta. It has been a few months since we traveled together and it reminded me how important it is to have proper pet travel accessories. These are some of our favorites:
Safety First!
The Kurgo Skybox Booster Seat keeps smaller dogs safely buckled, while allowing them to see out the window - something a simple safety harness can make difficult.
The Skybox adjusts to any height and holds up to 30 pounds. I often put both of our dogs in it! You simply strap them to their own harness, or a safety harness. When it is not in use, just unclasp the seat strap and flip it over the head rest. It is lightweight and collapses to just a few inches when not in use.
Note:
All dogs should be safely buckled up, just like you and the rest of your family. There are many styles of safety harnesses to choose from at many price ranges. You might be surprised to find how quickly your dog adjusts to a safety harness. Even the most active dogs can feel more secure when they are restrained in the car. And everyone will be safer in case of a sudden stop or accident.
The To Go Bowl by Furry Travelers is a must have travel accessory for all road trips. Cookie was able to drink whenever she wanted without having to stop the car or worry about splashing. We also used the bowl in our hotel and at the dog show by removing the cup portion (which of course carried her treats).
The patented, award winning To Go Bowl fits cup holders between 3 - 4 inches and can be used for dogs of all sizes.
We never take a trip without Cookie's own bag, the EBD Carry All Travel Bag. This bag is the greatest! It has so many interior pockets that staying organized is a piece of cake. Cookie had to look her best while working at the dog show, so we had pockets for her hair brush, dental spray, tear wipes, extra harness and leash, a coat (it was cold there!) and still had room for some of my own things. The EBD Carry All Bag even comes with its own fleece blanket.
NEW FAVORITE: I picked up the Kurgo Quantum Leash at the trade show this month. It is a leash that can be used 6 different ways (see details)! I didn't really see a benefit to using this type of leash, especially for a small dog like Cookie. While setting up our booth at the show, I thought I would give it a try. Cookie likes to be with me all the time, especially when in a new environment. I often keep her in her Susan Lanci Travel Sling, but she can still be in the way and gets kind of heavy after a while. Anyway, I hooked the Quantum Leash to her harness and hooked it across my shoulder. What a problem solver! She was with me everywhere I went, without me having to carry her.
Finally, the big seller of the show and perhaps my all time favorite product (next to the To Go Bowl, of course), is the Susan Lanci Travel Sling. Cookie "hung around" all day, every day at the show and really started a trend with the other small dog owners in Atlanta. The sling is ideal for smaller dogs (under 10 pounds) and comfortable for both you and your pup. It is lightweight, breathable, and folds up so small you can keep it in your pocket or purse!
Traveling with your dog can be fun and easy! There are many, many great travel accessories for pets. Furry Travelers goal is to carry the newest and most unique pet travel products on the market. We are constantly adding great new items, so check our website often!

Did you know that dogs don't have sweat glands like people have (except for a couple of glands on their feet)? This is the reason why dogs pant- it allows them to rid their body of heat. Unfortunately, when the temperatures spike during hot summer days, panting alone is not enough to keep their bodies cool.
Here are a few tips for keeping your dog safe, happy, and comfortable in the summer heat:
· Lots of Water- The most important thing you can do for your pet is make there is plenty of fresh, cool water available to drink at all times. Keep the dog bowl in a shady location and change the water frequently to keep it cool. Bring a portable dog water bottle with you when you're on-the-go.
· Find Shade- It's not uncommon for dogs to enjoy a little sunbathing, but it's important that you provide him or her with a shady place to cool down in-between prolonged exposure to the sun and heat. A solar canopy can provide shade for your dog to prevent the harmful effects caused by excessive heat.
· Protect the Paws- While doggy paw pads may seem tough, they're also very sensitive to heat and burn while walking on hot surfaces such as pavement on a scorching summer day. Try to keep your pet on grass or dirt if possible and check their pads for redness. You can protect your dog's paws from hot surfaces using breathable dog boots, particularly useful for city goers who don't have the option of avoiding hot roads and sidewalks.
· Pool Time- Taking your dog swimming at a pool or lake is a great way that your dog can cool off. Another great option if you don't have a normal-sized pool available is to purchase a kiddy pool and keep it filled with water for your dog to soak in when he/she is feeling overheated.
· Car Safety- Never leave your dog in the car on hot days, even for a short period of time. Doing so can lead to heat stroke and irreversible organ damage. Keep a portable dog bowl filled with water to ensure your dog stays hydrated on road trips and utilize a pet carrier so that you can bring your dog with you wherever you go.
· Hot Weather Apparel- There is plenty of doggy gear to prevent and relieve your pet from overheating. Items to buy if your pet is spending a lot of time in the heat include dog cooling jackets, harnesses, and cooling collars. This amazing lightweight pet apparel can reduce a dog's temperature by up to 30%. You can also find doggy eyewear for protecting your pup's eyes from damaging sun rays.
· Cooling Bed- Dog beds are oftentimes too warm in the summer for your pet to enjoy, which is why you may frequently find them sprawled out on the tile floor instead on hot days. A cooling dog bed with gel-like material offers the comfort and softness of a traditional doggy bed but will keep your pooch cool and comfortable.
We know that you want your pet to enjoy the warm sunny weather just as much as you do. Taking certain precautions and preparing for the heat with the right gear and pet accessories will ensure that your furry friend is healthy and happy all summer long!

5) Raincoat for spring showers
Doggy raincoats are a must-have item to prepare one's pooch for heavy spring showers. The Handi-Drink is a compact, portable water bottle for pets on-the-go that has a patented rubber flow-control valve in the cap to prevent leaks, spills, and backwash contamination. We have dog strollers to fit every type of dog and activity so owners can now bring their furry friends along without the worry. This picture is from a trade show we brought Cookie and Katie to. It came in very handy!
9) Dog Carrier-Backpack

10) Hands-Free Leash
Finally, a solution for active pet owners who enjoy taking their dog along for a run or brisk walk but hate having their hands in a bind. The Patento Pet Hands Free Leash wraps securely around the wrist, allowing owners to free up both hands so that they can jog with a more natural posture.
TO GO BOWL
Of course, we must also mention our own To Go Bowl! Remember to take it along while out and about with your pooch and you won't need to share your drink or make a special stop at the drive through for water.
Have a Happy Spring!

Many of us will be taking our furry ones on road trips this Thanksgiving. Here are some ideas for vehicle accessories that make traveling with pets easier.
It is so important to keep your pet's safety in mind while on the road. While many like to have them on their lap or see them enjoying the breeze in their face, this can be very dangerous in the event of an abrupt stop or accident.
To keep your pet secure, we recommend a safety harness or, for smaller dogs, a booster seat with a tether to attach to their harness. Some pet carriers such as the Sleepypod can be secured in place with your car's seat belt. These items will prevent your pooch from jumping around the car and keep them in place in the event of a sudden stop.
Car seat covers and hammocks are a worthwhile investment as they protect seats from water, snow and muddy paws. They come in a variety of sizes, colors and styles and are very easy to install.
Proper hydration while on the road is important to your dog's health and comfort. The To Go Bowl is a water bowl that is designed to fit into a car's cup holder - in the front or back seat - and allows your dog to drink whenever he wants without stopping the car.
Stay organized by using a seat back organizer or cargo organizer for your pet's toys, leashes, treats, etc.
If your dog gets anxious in the car, try a calming remedy or anxiety wrap. We have heard from many happy customers, including one of our own Furry Travelers, that they really do work!
Just for fun, you can personalize your vehicle with a cute magnet or license plate cover.

Wishing you and your Furry Travelers safe travels!

The following information was taken from the FDA Veterinarian Newsletter
With the summer months rapidly approaching, vacation season will soon be here. We all need a little time away from the monotony of an everyday routine, so as you get ready to retreat, it's important to know how to care for your four-legged friends traveling with you. Most of us travel by car or plane, but each option brings certain drawbacks for pets.
Car Travel
Car travel is usually less stressful on pets because it allows Freckles and Champ to be close to you, so you can monitor their well-being and come to their aid when needed. If you choose to drive to your destination, here are a few helpful hints to make the trip more enjoyable.
Motion sickness: It's common for pets to experience motion sickness while traveling in a car. To help avoid an upset stomach, don't feed your pet a large meal before travel. Cracking a window to allow fresh air to circulate through your vehicle also helps. If Champ is prone to motion sickness or if Freckles' sensitive stomach acts up again, you may want to put them in the front seat next to you. Riding up front helps because less motion is felt in the front of the vehicle.
Bathroom breaks: While Champ may snooze for the majority of the trip, it's still important to give him frequent bathroom breaks. Traffic is unpredictable, so if it has been more than a couple of hours, stop and give your dog a chance to relieve himself and stretch his legs.
Sedatives: While sedatives may make your pet seem less stressed during car trips, these medications also have a tendency to dull the senses and lessen your pet's ability to react to the environment, which can be dangerous in an emergency. When traveling by car or by plane, avoid giving your pet any type of sedative. If you think Champ or Freckles really needs a sedative to travel, talk to your pet's veterinarian before your trip.
Air Travel
For people, flying is often quicker and easier than driving, but flying can be a more stressful experience for your pet. If you decide to travel by air, it's important to keep a few things in mind.
Cargo travel: While you're snacking, reading, and sleeping in relative comfort up in economy seating, Champ is usually traveling in the cargo area below, subjected to temperature fluctuations and loud noises. A cat or small dog may be allowed to travel in the plane's cabin, as long as the pet is kept in a crate and the crate fits underneath the seat. Check with specific airlines for more information about cabin travel for your pet.
Check on your pet: Make sure to tell the plane's Captain or flight attendant that you have a pet on board. If the flight staff knows about Champ in cargo, they are better able to check on him for you, especially if an unusual situation occurs, such as an unscheduled landing, extended taxi time, or long layover.
Walk your dog: If you and Champ have a connecting flight, try to walk him before that connecting flight departs. Many airports provide dog parks just outside the terminal. A bathroom break and a short walk will help Champ relax and stay calm during the remainder of his journey.
Crate your pet: During flights, most pets are housed in pet crates provided by their owners. It's important to prepare your pet's crate with safety in mind. Pet crates should provide ample space for your pet to move around and should also meet the requirements set by the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (USDA/APHIS) and the International Air Transportation Association (IATA).
When your pet is crated, remember to include:
A bowl of dry food;
A bowl or other container of frozen water that will melt over the course of the trip, giving your pet constant access to cold water;
Appropriate bedding, such as a soft towel or blanket, or shredded newspaper or wood chips if the traveling pet is a hamster, gerbil, or guinea pig; and
A label on the outside of the crate that is clearly marked with your pet's name and your contact information. You should include both your home contact information and your destination contact information.
Be Prepared: If you plan to stay in a hotel while traveling, contact the hotel ahead of time to make sure it is pet friendly.
Before your trip, research veterinary hospitals in the city or town of your destination in case of a pet emergency during the vacation.
Hawaii and Abroad: Traveling outside the continental United States with your pet requires advanced planning. For international travel, contact the appropriate country's embassy or consulate at least 4 weeks before your trip. Different countries may require different documentation for your pet's entry. The state of Hawaii also has entry requirements for arriving pets.
